WAI Winter Talks Series 2013 / 2014
Our ever popular Talks Series continues. . . . .
20th November 2013, 8pm to about 9:30.
A talk about the "Original Survey and Modern Mapping Methods" will be given by Dominic Cronin.
The systematic mapping of Ireland started with the Ordnance Survey from 1829 onwards. To create a map for which all pieces fitted together it was first necessary to measure the earth. The Victorian way of doing this was to measure one length accurately for a baseline and then measure angles to the ends of this to mountaintops and further mountaintops. From this primary triangulation further work led to measuring fields, houses, roads and all other features. At the end of the process there was the creation of the 25 and 6 inch to the mile maps. In contrast modern mapping uses a variety of techniques some based on airphotography, GPS and Electronic Distance Measurement. . . . .
Joyce Country Challenge 2013
The 7th annual Joyce Country Challenge will be remembered as year of the heat wave. Having experienced all types of possible weather in the last 6 years, we should have known that a heat wave was the only possibility remaining.

The Mourne Wall Walk 2013

We are all looking forward to this important event.

Comeragh Challenge 2013
Couldn't help but notice as I watched the All-England tennis finals from Wimbledon as I sat nice and cozy, minding the tools of our trade (Our Sore Feet) after this years great Comeragh Challenge - how the players can do nothing but moan and whine!
There's forever something wrong with their shoes - or the sun is in their eyes - or they can't get their prefered balls - or (God Forbid) they've run out of challenges !!!!
Well the ever avid Hillwalker who was in abundance on this mighty series of walks, hosted each year by the Dungarvan Hillwalking Club is sure never to run out of any Challenge in any shape or form . . . .
The Lug Walk 2013
It barely took two minutes around the 5am mark to see any and all who were attired in shorts to alas dig deep into their rucksacks and pull out sad looking leggings and indeed full raingear (as was their want).
And be it a wild guess or a Challenge Walker's intuition - but little or no Factor50 would be needed today!
The rains of the day began at the Starting Checkpoint as over a hundred hardy walkers declared themselves off and running on this year's Lug Walk as hosted by the Irish Ramblers Hillwalking Club.
And not to be outdone - a savage wind joined forces and never truly let-up all day . . . . .
