The Camino for Cappagh
23rd to the 28th September 2010
TRIP OUTLINE
Welcome to our elite group of trekkers, we plan to have a great trip
while helping a special cause and saving lives. The funds raised
on this trip will help our most vulnerable patients, our children with
Bone Tumour Cancer. For these children early diagnosis is critical,
it can save their life!
The money you have raised for this trip will help to provide a new T3 scanner
(advanced MRI machine) which will allow early diagnoses of many illnesses,
including Bone Tumour Cancer, and ultimately save lives.
This will be the first T3 scanner in a public hospital in Ireland and will not only benefit the
patients at Cappagh National Orthopaedic hospital but patients from other hospitals as well.
Your participation on this trip has already made a difference to many lives. Thank you.

The Schedule outline
Before departure we will have a talk from our guide and advice on equipment to bring.
***********************************************************************************************
Day 1: 23rd Sept @ 8:30m
This historic journey will start at St James’s gate in Dublin, the starting
point for medieval Irish pilgrims. We will depart from St James gate at
9am and head on to Dublin airport where we fly to Bilbao and then transfer
by bus to our starting point in Roncesvalles.
Orreaga-Roncesvalles is not only the most exceptional hill in the first Way
from Europe. For some centuries, it has been one of the most crowded religious convened centres in
Navarra. The surroundings of Orreaga- Roncesvalles are full of places to lose oneself in and discover
the remains of the people who populated these territories since the dawn of time.
This is a very historic village with a great medieval pilgrim’s hospital and it is also a traditional
starting point for the Camino de Santiago
There is plenty to see in Roncesvalles, a town steeped in history. Accommodation here is half board
with two people sharing. Dinner is a chance to really get to know the group and enjoy the craic.
*********************************************************************************************************
Day 2: 24th Sept Roncesvalles to Zubiri (7h, 22km, +90m -550m)
We rise at 6am and have breakfast and pack, saying goodbye to
Roncesvalles and starting our journey along the pilgrim’s way at 7am.
The Camino crosses two beautiful mountain passes and continues on through
beech and oak woods and meadows before coming to Espinal, where the
panoramic views of the countryside with the Pyrenees in the background are a
sight to behold. The river Arga runs alongside this part of the Camino and
continues its course all the way to Larrasoana. Along the way we will pass
through Burguete, the town that Hemingway loved so much. Zubiri is a very
scenic little village with a gothic bridge, which legend says if you walk your cattle 3 times around the
pillar on the bridge it will cure them of rabies.
Bring day packs with you and your heavier luggage will be transported to the next accommodation in
Zubiri. Zubiri has an ATM and shops.
*****************************************************************************************************
Day 3: Sept 25th – Zubiri to Pamplona (6h, 20km, +/-250m)
We rise at 6am and have breakfast and pack, starting our journey to
Pamplona at 7am.
The Camino runs along the river Arga, at the foot of a group of hills covered
in beech, oak and Scots pine. As we approach Pamplona, the landscape shows
the obvious influence of civilisation; with its conifers, reforestation and farmlands.
Bring day packs with you and your heavier luggage will be transported to the next accommodation in
Pamplona. Pamplona has ATM’s, Shops and all facilities.
*************************************************************************************************
Day 4: Sept 26th – Pamplona to Puente de la Reina (6h15, 21.5km, +330m -
480m)
When leaving Pamplona behind, you are also leaving behind the Atlantic area
of Navarra. From here onwards, the landscape will be dominated by cereal
crops, Holm oaks and Mediterranean brushwood. The Pamplona basin is left
behind too when you cross the "Alto del Perdon". This route encompasses the
best view of Pamplona you are ever likely to have. Puente de la Reina has
ATM, internet and shops.
**********************************************************************************************
Day 5: Sept 27th – Puente de la Reina to Estella (6h15, 21km, +260m -170m)
The Camino to Estella is very uneven and quite agricultural. Small towns and
villages are dotted amongst cereal fields, vineyards and olive trees. Along the
way the Romanesque Church of San Roman in Cirauqui is a great visit and as
we leave cirauqui we will travel along an orginal segment of the old roman road.
Estella itself was founded in 1090 for pilgrims by the wishes of King Sancho
Ramirez and contains a beautiful Church of San Miguel in Estella and
Romanesque cloister at the Church of San Pedro de la Rua . Here we will spend
our last night together and have a farewell dinner in Estella. Estella has ATM,
internet and shops.
***************************************************************************************************
Day 6: 28th Sept – Estella to Dublin
We will leave Estella and the Camino de Santiago for this year and
return to Bilbao and Dublin. Our flights are due into Dublin at 17:10
where we will all say or fond goodbyes, until next year!
