Providing Services and Supports to People with an Intellectual Disability
Ability West provides services and supports to people with an intellectual disability throughout Galway City and County.
We will be holding a trek to the Camino de Compostela De Santiago in Northern Spain, to walk the eighth and final section (110kms) of the Camino de Compostela from 14th to the 21st of September, 2010. We will walk the country roads, hills and footpaths of Galacia, from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela. Are you reasonably fit? Up for a challenge? Can you raise €2,000 for a worthy cause?
In the past, these initiatives have raised much needed funds which were invested in capital projects, in 2007, funds provided for the fit out of Whitestrand Children’s Respite Service in Galway and in 2008 the funds went towards The Glebe Day Service Premises in Tuam. It is envisaged that the fundraising from the trek will go towards similar projects in the future.
The Route
Going through the hills of Galacia, this trip could be physically demanding and would require a reasonable level of fitness. It takes one week to complete, walking approximately 21 kms per day and the trail is a combination of small country roads, stone footpaths and well maintained compact dirt tracks with no steep climbs or treacherous descents. It is strenuous enough to give a sense of achievement at the end of each day without being exhausted!
