Organised by the Galtee Walking Club the annual Slievenamuck Marathon will take place on Sunday March 28th 2010. This walking event is open to everyone who feels they have the required level of fitness to complete either the 20km or 40km course. The walk starts at Rock an Tarbh Car Park which is across the road from the upper entrance to Aherlow House Hotel. This is on the R664 which is the road from Tipperary Town to the Glen of Aherlow. The Irish Map reference is R 879 313 and the GPS coordinates are 52.433° N, 8.178° W. Registration begins at 8:00am and the Marathon gets under way at 9:00am. The registration fee is €10.00 per person.

The location for the Marathon is the Slievenamuck Ridge, the long low hill which forms the northern edge of the scenic Glen of Aherlow. From many points along the way there are excellent views across the valley to the Galtee Mountains. The Marathon course is the same as last year – in the shape of the figure 8 – and consists mostly of forest tracks and some farmland. Road walking is kept to a minimum - about 4 kms. The complete track is clearly marked by a series of white discs with black arrows.

Participants can chose a full or half marathon and both start at Rock an Tarbh car park. The course proceeds along the southern side of Slievenamuck and westwards to Mooreabbey, around Maonour Hill and eastwards to the start/central point. From here it continues to the Ballagh road, passing by the Millennium Monument and down to Bansha Woods Car Park. The walk circles back in a westward direction towards Christ the King Statue, through the nature park and on to the finishing point.

The Rock an Tarbh Car Park is the start, halfway and finishing point for this marathon – hence the figure 8 

A number of organisations including mountain rescue (SEMRA), amateur radio (AREN) and Bansha Civil Defence will provide backup support on the day.
