ENTRY CONDITIONS

Entrants must pre-enter.  Entry on the day will not be accepted.  Entrants must be over 18 years of age, be in a fit physical condition to participate in this very arduous walk, have considerable hill walking experience, have windproof, waterproof clothing, a rucksack and wear proper hiking boots; have a first aid kit, and emergency food and drink, have a compass, whistle and Wicklow Sheet 56 and to start the walk between 5.00 am and 6.00 am at the latest.

Drop-out checkpoints and closing times:

Entrants must arrive at:

Sally Gap by 09:30,

Wicklow Gap by 14:30,

Turlogh Hill Upr by 15:30,

Table Track by 17:30.

We recommend that walkers carry a mobile phone on the Walk and provide their number on the application form.

Note:
In the event that you abandon the walk and are unable to leave the walk at a checkpoint, you must ring the emergency number supplied.

Failure to comply with this instruction will result in the Mountain Rescue Team and Gardai being called out on a wasteful and costly search.

Control cards will be issued to each participant in advance of the walk.  On the day of the walk, these must be handed in at each checkpoint. Stewards at checkpoints will eliminate participants who arrive at Sally gap, Wicklow gap or Table track after the Checkpoint closing times.

SPECIAL NOTICE:   GLEN OF IMAAL
The Department of Defence has requested that each participant in the walk be informed by the Irish Ramblers Club of the dangers of unexploded missiles on the Department's lands in the Glen of Imaal and that each participant be advised not to deviate from the planned route from Lugnaquilla via Camarahill or touch any metal object seen on route.

The Lug Walk

The Lug Walk is a long-distance endurance walk from Stone Cross Bohernabreena, Co. Dublin, over the  mountain tops to Lugnaquilla Co. Wicklow, ending at Seskin in the Glen of Imaal.  It is an established route, 50 kilometres long with a total ascent of 2400 metres and covers 17 peaks and is mainly over open mountain terrain. This walk is a serious test of navigational skill as well as stamina. The average time taken to cover the route is 15 hours. Starting check-in point is at the forest entrance,  2km south of Stone Cross,  at Grid Ref.: O:075207

Recommendation

It is preferable that entrants participate as members of a group rather than as individuals, although this is not a condition of entry. In the interest of protecting the environment, we encourage prospective participants to avoid the route of the Lug Walk during pre-Walk training.

Leaving the Lug Walk

If you are abandoning the walk please only leave at a checkpoint and hand your control card to a steward.   In the event that you abandon the walk and fail to leave the walk at a checkpoint and to notify checkpoint personnel, you must ring the emergency number 045-867115.
Failure to heed this instruction will result in the Mountain Rescue Team and Gardai being called out on a wasteful and costly search.

Organisers’ Decision is Final.

In any matter arising in connection with the walk the decision of the Irish Ramblers Club is final.

The organisers will not hesitate to cancel the entry of anyone whom, in their opinion, is not fit to take part in this walk. Every precaution is taken by the organisers to safeguard participants, but those taking part do so at their own risk.

In the event of extreme weather conditions the Walk may be terminated at Wicklow Gap in the interest of safety.
Please refer to the conditions of entry on the application form.

Accident Procedure

Participants are strongly recommended to carry a First Aid Kit and Whistle - International Distress Signal is six blasts in one minute - pause and repeat.
If you feel unable to continue on the route, or meet with an accident you should send word to the stewards at the nearest checkpoint, giving exact details of your location or ring the emergency number 01 8378747.  It is vital that you do not move from this spot until the Rescue Team arrives.  If you see someone in difficulty make sure that the stewards are notified immediately.

Food and Drink

As the walk will take up to 15 hours to complete, participants should carry sufficient food and water with them. The organisers will provide liquid refreshments at Sally Gap, Wicklow Gap and the finish.  Water can be replenished at the Gaps.

Transport  (Bus)

Transport will be provided from Darcy McGee's (Formally Spawell) car park, Tempelogue,  to the starting point, 2km south of Stone Cross, between 4.30am and 6.00am ( including a bus departing at 4.40), and from the finishing point, Seskin (Glen of Imaal)  to Blessington or Darcy McGee's Pub (Formally Spawell), Tempelogue at 18:30,  19:30 and 20:30.

If you avail of the opportunity to have a change of clothes brought, from the pub car park, Templeogue to the Glen of Imaal,  ensure that it is properly bagged and labelled.

In the event of participants abandoning the walk at Sally Gap or Wicklow Gap, emergency transport will be provided to the nearest bus route.

Return transport from Seskin will only be guaranteed for those who pre-book.
