Art O'Neill Walk

A Regular's View by Tom Milligan

Start: Dublin Castle at midnight

Distance: 64km      Ascent: 1,200m

Many years ago, on the first Friday after Christmas each year, three or four walkers would undertake this journey in commemoration of the escape of Red Hugh O'Donnell and Art & Henry O'Neill from Dublin Castle on the 6th January, 1592 (It was actually Christmas Eve, but with the readjustment of the Gregorian calendar Christmas Eve became 6th January). Over the years we became bored with the same few faces, so we invited an extra few friends along in subsequent years to add new conversation to the long night's long journey. However, friends have friends who also have friends, and these turned up in later years. Before we knew it we had 62 people on this informal occasion! With no backup, no refreshments, and no transport at the finish in Greenane, this walk became a serious test of the ability of individuals to maturely take responsibility for their own welfare.

Those taking part in this trek should look into how they are going to get home if they have to leave the walk, and provide their own refreshments along the way. Most importantly, a careful study of the route allied with a firm grasp of navigational procedures is essential. DO NOT EXPECT TO BE LED BY SOMEONE WHO APPEARS TO BE LEADING! He's only leading because he finds himself at the front. He could get lost in the middle of the night, and if you're following him then you'll be lost too.

Despite taking place in what can be the most inhospitable of places and at the most inclement time of year, there have never been any casualties requiring mountain rescue personnel, radio facilities or first-aid organisations. This is because everyone knows that great personal responsibility and maturity is required on this walk. If you intend doing the walk then you be likewise responsible: Study the route, know how to use a compass, bring sufficient supplies of food and clothing, and money for the bus or train at the finish.

"...but if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."
