Burren Walk 2008 Report

Burren Walk 2008 Report

The day started off with heavy sea fog and misty rain dampening spirits all round. By 1:35, all walkers had passed checkpoint 1, and the weather had taken a turn for the better, with visibility increasing from 50m to completely clear. As a result many walkers upgraded their option to one of the longer walks.

The walk started on time, and there were no mishaps during the event. The final walkers returned to receive their certificates at about 5:15pm. This year it was particularly noticeable that every walker had checked in at their relevant checkpoints and also to the finish where they received their certificates. We thank all of them for their co-operation.

Numbers were down this year and we gather that a number of people were informed that the walk was run on the previous week. We have taken the steps to inform as many organisations of the actual date of next years walk so that there will be no confusion.

We have revised our maps to show all of the individual walks so it is possible to upgrade to another walk provided checkpoint operators are notified. We stress that the basic safety equipment should be carried in event of changing weather conditions - a COMPASS and a whistle perhaps. We do have PMR radios at each checkpoint and if you carry one you can feel free to contact the checkpoint operator at any time.

We DO NOT supply water or snacks at the checkpoints so do please come prepared!

Special thanks to the Civil Defence for providing the Rescue and First Aid Services and the Galway VHF Group who provided the communications to co-ordinate the checkpoints, organsisation and emergency services.
