An umbrella group for Irish hillwalkers.
New All-Ireland 10m contour GPS map produced, with hill-shading.
A contributor ("Pazapas") to MountainViews has made available an improved map for Garmin GPS units. There have been various previous maps for Garmins. (These are maps that appear on the actual GPS unit and include contour, summit and other topographical map detail) There is one from the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) and a previous one all detailed in the resources section of MountainViews. There is also one coming from Garmin, probably in 2008. This new community version (free) has contour information, layer tinting (different colours for different elevations like OSI or OSNI maps) and makes use of the most recent (MountainViews) information on summit positions which includes the 840 summits of at least 400m. Contour data is interpolated to 10m. It has significantly more features than the SMC version and uses around 16Mb of Garmin memory.
The installation of this map requires a PC and Garmin's program Mapsource as well as a mapping GPS. It would be fair to say that the installation is not for the technologically faint hearted. Create a "System Restore Point" before you start. Put the installation files in a place with a short filepath. Edit the two ".reg" files carefully.
Newsroom has tried the map and found that it works well.
